Hedgelaying Course with John Shone

Hedgelaying for Beginners

On this 2 day course, ran on 18th &19th March, the 5 participants were given a brief introduction to this ancient craft; discovered the local methods and skills behind hedge-laying, used traditional hand tools and learnt about the natural history of hedgerows whilst receiving hands on experience of laying an actual hedge. The course was run by our own local experienced hedgelayer John Shone.

John practices the Midland style used mainly in this area.  Tools used were axes and bill-hooks though some modern tools such as bow saws and loppers were used occasionally.

Traditional hedgelaying provides dense cover at ground level for livestock and wildlife, consolidating the network of fruiting ‘green corridors’ linking other habitats. Normally, hedgelaying can be conducted between late October and March whilst the hedging plants are dormant.
